My Shiba Inu Escapes From Its Harness: How to Prevent It
The Shiba Inu has a reputation as an escape artist, and it is well deserved: when it dislikes something, it backs up, shrugs its shoulders and slides out of the harness. If your dog gets loose, it is almost always down to size, fit or design. Here are the five things worth checking.
Quick answer: use the right size, adjust it so only two fingers fit, choose a harness that does not go over the head and spreads pressure across the chest, and pair it with a shock-absorbing leash.

5 keys to stop your Shiba escaping from its harness
Get the right size
A harness that is too big is the most common cause of escapes. Measure the neck and chest and check the size guide for Shiba Inus.
Make the fit firm
Adjust the straps so only two fingers fit between the harness and the body. Check it with your dog standing and also moving.
Choose a closure that does not go over the head
Many Shibas resist having a harness pulled over their head and learn to back up to slip free. The CountryFox PRO fastens with a dual neck opening, without going over the head.
💡 Practise at home: put it on for a few minutes a day with treats before heading out. Associating it with something good reduces stress and escape attempts.
Spread the pressure across the chest
A padded harness that spreads pressure across the chest stops your dog from pulling backwards to get free. Use the front ring for anti-pull walking.
Use a shock-absorbing leash
The CountryFox PRO leash has a shock-absorbing spring that softens sudden tugs, and its aluminium carabiner has a safety lock.
⚠️ Important: if your Shiba has already learned to escape, avoid letting it off the leash in open areas without control. A Shiba has a strong prey drive and recall is not always reliable.
When you head to an open space
For open spaces, the 5-metre FreedomGlow training leash gives freedom with control. And if you would rather get a complete walking set, choose the CountryFox Walking Kit (harness, leash and treat pouch); the FreedomGlow is added separately.
