The Best Harness for a Shiba Inu
If you have a Shiba Inu, you already know that finding the right harness is a challenge on another level. Shibas are smart, independent dogs with an extraordinary ability to wriggle out of anything they dislike. It’s not that they’re difficult; they just have very high standards.
And they’re right.
A Shiba’s build and strong personality mean most accessories on the market fall short. The CountryFox design was born from that real need.

Why is it so hard to put a harness on a Shiba?
Shiba Inus combine the physique of a hunting dog with an alert temperament. That’s why a generic harness isn’t just uncomfortable, it can be unsafe.
They’re experts at backing out
A Shiba’s natural move when scared or standing their ground is to pull backwards, hunch their shoulders and slip out of the harness. If the design doesn’t hug the ribcage properly, they’ll be out in seconds.
They reject invasive handling
Shiba Inus are highly alert dogs that don’t tolerate movements over their head well. A harness that has to go over the head creates stress and resistance, and every walk starts with a battle.
They have a specific build
A relatively short neck and a proportionally broad chest. Many generic harnesses fit badly: too loose at the neck, too tight under the armpits.
They’re strong for their size
A Shiba Inu making a run for it has surprising strength. The harness needs to be tough enough to withstand an unexpected pull without the fasteners giving way.
What makes a harness truly ergonomic for a Shiba?
No pulling over the head, double side closure
The CountryFox PRO goes on by opening two fasteners at the neck and wrapping the harness around the body. No movements over the head. No fiddling with their paws. No stress. No battle.
💡 Why the side closure matters so much for Shibas: Shiba Inus have a muscle memory that treats movement over the head as a threat signal. Removing that movement completely turns the harness ritual from a battle into a routine within a few days.
A firm, secure fit at the neck
The CountryFox PRO design allows a very precise neck adjustment: firm enough that a Shiba can’t back out and break free, comfortable enough to avoid any rubbing.
💡 The two-finger rule: exactly two fingers should fit between the harness and your Shiba’s neck. If three or more fit, it’s too loose and they can escape. If none fit, it’s too tight.
Neoprene padding where the harness touches
A Shiba’s chest and belly are protected by soft neoprene padding. Pressure is distributed evenly so your dog can move with total freedom.

How the CountryFox ergonomic harness answers these needs
We didn’t design this harness to be “just another one”, but to solve the critical points, combining an ergonomic pattern with maximum security:
Ergonomic “Y” structure
The front of the CountryFox PRO is designed to rest directly on your Shiba’s sternum. This frees the shoulder joint (scapular area) completely, letting them run, jump and trot with their natural lightness, without altering their gait or causing long-term injuries.
Double side closure, nothing over the head
The harness wraps anatomically around the neck and body. Because it opens fully through the side closures, your Shiba won’t see anything pass over their eyes. We turn a stressful pre-walk ritual into a calm, respectful routine.
Anti-escape fit
Thanks to its three adjustment points (at both the neck and the chest), the harness molds to your Shiba’s exact silhouette. Because it fits snugly without pressing, we remove the “play” they usually slip backwards through, guaranteeing a safe, ergonomic fit.
Textile protection for their double coat
The entire inside that touches the dog’s body has soft neoprene padding. It not only cushions sudden pulls by spreading the pressure evenly across the chest, but also prevents the friction that tends to break, tangle and mat the Shiba’s dense coat.
Size guide for Shiba Inus
Most adult Shiba Inus fit size S or M of the CountryFox PRO. Always measure the chest girth (the widest point, just behind the front legs):
| Size | Neck girth | Chest girth | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 22–30 cm | 34–46 cm | Shiba puppy (under 7 kg) |
| S | 28–40 cm | 44–56 cm | Small adult Shiba / female (7–11 kg) |
| M | 36–50 cm | 54–68 cm | Adult Shiba / male (11 kg+) |
⚠️ If your Shiba is between sizes: always choose the larger size. Comfort and safety come first, and the CountryFox has precise adjustment on both straps to fine-tune the fit.
